Climate-Proofing is a Thing in Real Estate

Climate-Proofing is a Thing in Real Estate

Florida is a hugely affected market for climate related disasters. A common target for tropical storms and hurricanes, frequent natural disasters targeting property and life slam Florida hard, fast and repeatedly. Insurance rates are so high that many can’t afford to insure their home. Many are tired of rebuilding and the inconveniences of closed roads, flooding downed trees and property damage recovery. When a Real Estate magazine for agents in Florida did an article, I listened up.

There’s so many factors to consider: Older construction vs. new more resilient building codes, zoning issues, Some older, bunker-like construction that might even best modern building codes, etc. This article digs in to each and has a ton of information I found fascinating, some ideas I never considered too:

Usually, what hits Florida is largely a weakened system if it makes it up here to Massachusetts, but not always. I’ve noticed that we still get a few tornado warnings every Summer for the past 2 or 3 years, so WEATHER does happen year round here now. Tornado Warnings in MA. Remember those growing up? I don’t. It’s not just the blizzards and Nor’easters anymore.

Take a peek at this article and think about what you might want to do about your unique situation, if anything. If you’d like some advice on low cost ideas to help weather the storm in relative comfort, take a look at an article I wrote in January and republish annually:
