I saw an article this week and was completely surprised. Apparently, Amazon(Yeah! That Amazon.) has invested $3.6 Billion in a fund to finance affordable housing in it’s hometown communities(Washington State’s Puget Sound region; the Arlington, Virginia/National Capital region; and Nashville, Tennessee). These are regions that host significant Amazon facilities. Their figures estimate that about 46,000 families in those regions can now take advantage of those new opportunities. I don’t know about you, but I feel a little bit better about buying things from Amazon. This is how it’s supposed to work. Successful businesses have been & should be the most prolific source of charity and goodwill. Yes, this initiative benefits a region many Amazon employees live in, but there have to be many unaffiliated people getting an opportunity that wouldn’t otherwise be there.
Too bad they’re not around here in a larger sense. We could use a lot more middle class housing, starter homes, mid level condos, affordable apartments, etc. The governor has an initiative that has a number of interesting suggestions. One proposes relaxing zoning restrictions statewide on accessory dwelling units(like in-law apts, unattached units and more. This might be a good topic for next week…Hmmm.). Young people just starting out are struggling. It would be nice to have that Amazon development money around here for sure. Honestly, I really want to see a gajillion Amazon delivery drones flying around. It’ll temporarily satisfy my need for my own Jetson’s flying car.
