The Last Blue Light Special - Last Full Size Kmart Closes.

The Last Blue Light Special – Last Full Size Kmart Closes.

I know this has little to do with residential Real Estate. Like the spiraling death of Sears, This is a moment. It is cultural history.

Kmart, like Sears, marked special moments for Americans for generations. The arrival of the Sears catalog meant Christmas was coming to kids of my generation. OH No! The Blue Light Special! We have just 15 minutes to grab the deal. I can remember the spinning blue police lights in the store, so much like a cruiser’s lights that kids like me thought, “Damn, this is serious.”. The overhead announcement just added to the urgency.

The big box stores of old were places of wonder: toys, games, sports stuff, electronics, they had it all. Our kids have Walmart, Target, Kohls, etc. The new guys are efficient, carry more stuff, are open more hours. They do lack the charm of the old school, like Building 19. Family Dollar, Dollar Tree and Ocean State are great, but combined they can’t hold a candle to Building 19. You never knew what they carried from one visit to the next, but hunting the hidden treasures was half the fun.

The link to the article I saw on the closing of the Last Full Size Kmart is right here. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kmart-bridgehampton-last-kmart-close

It’s the end of an era for my generation. The new guys aren’t bad though. Not bad at all. They just lack the magic.
