A Tip on Protecting Your Home from Online Burglary Recon

A Tip on Protecting Your Home from Online Burglary Recon

Late at night, after Independence Day parties died down, thieves went hunting in my neighborhood. They broke into cars and stole anything of value they could find. Just from talking to a couple of neighbors, hundreds of $$$ worth was taken. There were many more victims. Whitman police were all over our neighborhood on July 5th.

There’s a number of things you can do to harden your home against burglars and other bad actors. One, I didn’t think about, but is just common sense, is preventing online “Bad Guy” recon of your home. Apps like Google or Apple Maps provide a 3D picture of the exterior of your home. From that, they can extrapolate the interior layout, work out least visible means of ingress, quick escape routes and more.

Jeff Rossen of WCVB Boston wrote an article on how to blur the pictures of your home on Google Maps and Apple Maps. Here’s the link:

Keep in mind, Once the change is made, it’s permanent. My parents both passed away years ago. Looking up their address on Google maps, showed my mom walking on her porch and my dad working in the yard. I attached those here. Those are memories I never want to lose. The new owner did choose to blur the pictures, even though he tore down my parents’ house, changed the address and built new. Attached is what that blurring looks like. Notice the exterior pics allow for a 180 degree view. Getting a rough interior layout would be easy. With the blurring, you can’t see a thing. I’m glad I saved the pics of the old house for our family.

Have Fun, Stay Safe & Aware.
